The menstrual cramps are due to hormone fluctuation that causes the uterine muscles to contract during period. It generally begins below the stomach area, in lower abdomen. Usually the severity of cramp is directly related to the total prostaglandin, a hormone produced by the body.

In some women causes like endometriosis might be responsible for cramps. The growth of normal tissue of the uterus, outside its usual location is called endometriosis.

In some cases women suffer from menstrual cramps due to heavy bleeding during period, reaching puberty at an early age, genetics, unhealthy habits like taking excess alcohol and illegal drugs, smoking and humdrum lifestyle.

During menstrual pain and cramping some women prefer to do is just relax, lie down and let the pain to disappear while some prefer to take painkillers to get rid of the pain. But taking painkillers might not always be the right thing to do for your body. You can follow these home remedies for menstrual cramps or pain, if you don’t want to depend on painkillers and if you have severe pain and cramping during periods go to the doctor.


1) Heat:

For reducing pain, you can place heating pad or hot water bottle directly on the cramping area until you feel comfortable. This helps to relax the contracting muscle in your uterus that causes pain. You can also have hot shower. Focus the drift of water on the back or cramping area.

2) Exercise:

For some women doing exercise may sound like crazy as they think they can hardly move then how will they do exercise during this period. Nevertheless walking or doing any physical exercise is effective in reducing menstrual pain. In doing aerobic exercise, your body pumps more blood and release endorphins, body’s natural painkiller to counteract the prostaglandins and cut down the cramp.

3) Calcium rich food:

Calcium is a good cure for menstrual cramps. A woman should take about 1000mg of calcium every day. Lack of calcium causes muscles to become hyperactive that result into menstrual cramps. So women are recommended to drink milk daily or can take a cup of yogurt as they are rich in calcium.

4) Basil:

Basil is one of the very effective herbs for getting relief from menstrual cramps and pain. Squeeze a handful of basil leaves to take out the juice and add two teaspoon of it in a glass of hot water. Mix well and drink three times in a day during pain.

5) Ginger:

Ginger is an important herb that plays a main role in lowering the level of pain and can also make irregular periods regular. Add ginger in your foodstuff while cooking or suck some ginger small piece. You can also make black tea by adding half spoon crushed ginger, two spoon lemon juice and one spoon honey. Drink this tea at regular gap in a day.

6) Magnesium rich food:

Take magnesium rich food as this nutrient helps in mediating muscle contraction, thereby reduces the menstrual pain. A woman should intake about 500gm of magnesium every day. Magnesium rich food includes wholegrain, buckwheat, beans, salmon, vegetables and nuts.

7) Papaya:

Papaya is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent which is very effective home remedy for curing menstrual cramp during periods. Add papaya in your diet before and after your period to reduce or get rid of pain. Papaya has nutrients like vitamin A and C, carotene, calcium, iron that helps in relaxing muscle contraction.

8) Flaxseed:

Flaxseed stabilizes the creation of prostaglandin in the body, so reduces the intensity of menstrual cramp. Eat two tablespoon of flaxseed every day during periods. It can also improve uterine function.
