Indigestion: causes and remedies

Indigestion is a very common problem. At present scenario every person is busy in his jobs and earnings. Very few of them give attention at early stage of indigestion. It starts due to many reasons, like eating outside food habits and while eating watching television or busy in talking with other persons. Many people prefer outside foods (road side food stuff) due to its taste which can cause indigestion because food stall persons use same oil frequently to make their dishes which produces more bacteria and harmful elements in food items. And when we eat such type of food stuff, these harmful germs enters into our body and creates problem like acidity, heart burn, gastric ulcer, constipation and bloating.

Some other reasons of indigestion

1. Lack of exercise- Every exercise consumes energy. To fulfil the requirement of energy our body digest food and extract it.

2. Poor diet- Our body need balance diet. It should be rich in proteins and vitamins.

3. Smoking- It is very dangerous for health. It also increase indigestion problem.

4. Alcohol intake- If we take excess quantity of alcohol, it creates indigestion.

5. Dehydration- Our body needs liquid to perform its activity, lack of liquid causes indigestion.

6. Sleeplessness- It creates stress which is one of the main causes of indigestion.

7. Lack of nutrients- Our meal should be full of nutrients.


Remedies for indigestion


Ginger– it is one of the best remedy for indigestion due to its antibacterial and inflammatory properties. It avoids the cause of indigestion and improves enzymes flow necessary for the food digestion. We can chew it directly (small piece) or make ginger tea. Making ginger tea process is similar to normal (milk sugar) tea making process. One additional step is adding 1 teaspoon of freshly grinded ginger in water during boiling time of water.

Soda solution– if you feel acidity or gas problem then use it. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with one cup of water and drink it.

Peppermint (Pudina) – it has inflammatory property. You can eat it directly in case of feeling vomiting. We can use it in tea form. Add 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves in water and boil it. Drink it two times in a day.

Ice bag– If you feel stomach pain then place ice bag on your stomach for half an hour, it will provide you relief.

Fennel Seeds– It maintains the stomach acid which provides relief from stomach pain. We can use it in normal (milk sugar) tea or chew directly.

Butter milk– Drinking butter milk after the meal is a good habit. It improves digestion system.

Asafoetida (hing) – it is good for digestive system due to its anti-flammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It provides relief from gastric and stomach pain. Mix a small piece of asafoetida in warm water and drink it. We can use it in our food.

Apple cider vinegar– It is helpful in indigestion case. Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water and drink it.

Aloe Vera It is very helpful in stomach ulcers and improving digestive system. Mix one tablespoon aloe vera gel with a glass of water and drink it. Take it in morning at empty stomach. Pregnant or breast feeding women should avoid it.

Camomile– we can use it in our tea. It will calm down the digestive problems. Use it two to three times in a day.

Warm water-If you have just started feeling stomach pain then drink Luke warm water. It will provide relief.

Oatmeal-It prevents indigestion due to constipation. Take it in your breakfast.


Some other tips

Eat your food slowly and chew it completely.

Better to eat early in evening means 2 to 3 hours before sleep time.

Take 4 to 5 small meal in place of 2 big meals.

Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and other similar habits after meal.
